How to Block People from Following you on Google+

If you're using Google+ you'll want to take a look at this video!

I get an email notification every time somebody follows me on Google+. Typically I just ignore it and go on with my day, but for whatever reason, I looked through to see who all had followed me today.  I was disturbed to see a guy who had horrible stuff on his page, and I knew I didn't want any old creep following me, looking at my pictures, etc.  I decided it was time to be a whole lot more careful about knowing who is looking at my stuff.  From now on I will be checking out every person who follows me, and I will either put them in one of my circles or block them.  I will also not be setting any of my personal posts or photos to "public".  I will instead share them with those in my circles.

If you're like me, and are a little nervous about certain people following you, here's a quick tutorial on how to block people from following you.  (You may want to make the video full-size so you can see a little better.)

If you have any other helpful tips for Google+, be sure to leave us a comment!

My Free Spring Decor from CVS

This week CVS has jelly beans for $.99, and Sunday - Tuesday you'll also get back $.99 in Extrabucks making them free!  Since we do not need to be eating junk food around here, I decided it would be fun to use them for some fun decor!  I had this hurricane candle already, so I just added the jelly beans as a filler.  The only problem was that my hurricane was too big, and the bag of jelly beans was too small.  I didn't have anything that I could use as more filler, so I cut up some green paper and crumpled it up to look like grass, then added the jelly beans.

I'm pretty happy with it for a quick (and free!) spring piece, although I'm wondering if I need to tie a ribbon around it.

What do you think - ribbon or no? (I'd love any other comments or suggestions too!)

How to Grind Wheat in a Blender

I mentioned on my Facebook page a couple weeks ago that I had made bread using wheat that I ground in the blender.  Some of you were curious to see how it turned out, so I thought I'd share the post that I wrote over on my other blog

As requested, here are the results of my experiment with grinding wheat in the blender.  I love cooking with whole foods, but I've never baked with freshly ground wheat before.  I don't have a wheat grinder, and I certainly didn't intend on spending the money for one if it were possible to grind it in a blender.

Step one: Get some wheat berries.  I ordered mine from Vitacost since you get a free $10 coupon when you create an account.  I didn't feel like spending good money on an experiment when I knew it might not work.

I used hard white wheat berries, but I wouldn't think it would make much difference what kind you use.

Step Two:  Get your blender ready to go.  Do not let the brand name of my blender fool you.  KitchenAid mixers are definitely 10 steps ahead of any other mixer, but their blenders?  Eh...not my favorite by any means.  All that to say - even if you have a cheap blender, it will probably work just fine.

Step 3:   Add the wheat berries and start grinding.  I only ground about a cup at a time.  The wheat berries jumped so high when I turned it on that I was afraid if I added any more the flour would start flying out the top of the blender.

Step four: I found that I needed to let it run on high for about 2 minutes. If I ground for less time it still had chunks. And if I ground for more time, it didn't seem to get any more fine, but the motor started heating up the flour.

Step five: Bake some bread or rolls using your favorite whole wheat bread recipe.  I actually made some of both.  My bread didn't turn out too pretty, but you get the idea.

My conclusion:  The blender definitely does not get the flour very fine.  The dough feels very gritty when you're working with it.  But as you can see from the pictures, it is still very useable.  (How pretty your bread turns out just depends on how good of a cook you are - which I'm obviously not the greatest!)

I'm very curious now to try out a recipe I saw for Blender Pancakes!  You grind the wheat in the blender along with the other pancake ingredients and then pour them onto the griddle!

Has anyone else ever tried grinding wheat in a blender?  How did yours turn out?

How I Turned Pocket Change into Groceries #NoFeeCoinstar #CBias

My little man and I went on a date today.

(Ain't we cute?)

We went to the next town over (about 30 minutes away) and did a little shopping and ate some pizza.

But what does that have to do with pocket change and groceries?

I'm all about coupons and deals, so whenever I have the opportunity to get a good deal, I'm on it!  Bi-Lo often has great sales that can be combined with coupons, but there is not one in our town.  However, I knew there was one in the town where we were going on our date.

I checked over the ad and saw a couple good deals that I wanted to pick up while we were in the area.

Since I'm all about pinching every penny (literally!), I was looking for a good way to use up the loose change that seems to collect in the console of the van.  I also have problems with the change compartment of my wallet bursting at the seams.

I had heard of Coinstar coin conversion before, but never really paid much attention to it.  I didn't figure the few coins from the van and my wallet would be enough to justify paying the conversion fee.

However, through my friends at Collective Bias, I discovered that I could convert my coins to a Bi-Lo gift card with no fee!

That was enough convincing for me to give it a try!  I scrounged up the coins out of the van and from my wallet and headed on over to Bi-Lo after we were finished shopping and eating.

We grabbed our bag of change and went inside to find the Coinstar machine.

When we finished converting our coins we received a gift card with $10.83 on it.

We were thirsty after shopping, so we got some drinks.  I also picked up four boxes of Cheez-its for $1.67 each and a bottle of All detergent for $1.99.

My total was $12.03, so I only had to pay $1.20 after I used my gift card.  I got some good deals, and I got to use up all my loose change without having to pay a conversion fee!

If you want to take a  more detailed look at my experience, you can flip through my Google+ album here.

Also, be sure you're following Coinstar on Facebook and Twitter and also Bi-Lo on Facebook and Twitter to make sure you're keeping up with the latest news and deals!

Disclosure: I have been paid (at Coinstar’s request) to try and blog about Coinstar's products/services as part of a Collective Bias shopper insights study. All opinions are my own.

Frugal Tip: Regrow Your Green Onions

I have pinned a lot of things on Pinterest, but this is one of my favorite finds!  I love the added pizazz of green onions in recipes, but I hate paying for a pack of them and only using them one time.

Well, I saw somewhere on Pinterest that you can just put them in water and place them in a sunny window and they'll keep growing.  It works incredibly well!  They grow so quickly I think we could eat them for every meal and not run out!

At first I was afraid it was not going to work because the first day all the tops turned yellow and some of them wilted completely over.  Then I realized that the stalks were still nice and firm and that they were growing taller.  I just keep weeding out any that wilt and cut the yellowed tops off when I'm ready to use them.

Wow; this has saved me so much money!
