Make Your Own Soda with Sodastream

Sodastream
A while back our family received a Sodastream soda maker to try out. I really wanted to make a video so you could really see how cool it is, but obviously that didn't happen. I'll do my best to tell you in writing why I love this little gadget!

Our family does not drink a whole lot of soda, which usually means that when we do get a little craving for some, we don't have any on hand. Having the Sodastream has been so nice! We're able to make our own soda whenever we want some, and since the soda is made in one liter bottles, we don't end up feeling like we have to drink a whole ton of soda.
The process of using the Sodastream is extremely simple too. The thing you see on the left of the picture above is the carbonator (CO2 cartridge.) It should be inserted into the cylinder on the back of the machine. Once that is in place, it will only take a minute or two before you can serve freshly made soda! Fill one of the special bottles with cold water and screw it into the Sodastream. Then pull the handle on top of the machine rapidly over and over until there is a loud buzz.

(Don't be afraid to keep pulling. The first time we used the machine we kept pulling and pulling and pulling, asking each other every once in a while, "Do you think that was a buzz?" We were so sure that the thing was going to blow up! In fact, we decided we'd better stop. So we very cautiously unscrewed the bottle, and...nothing happened. We tasted the water, and it tasted like flat seltzer water. Lesson learned: don't be afraid to keep pulling. When it buzzes you will know.)

After you hear the first buzz, pull the lever again until you hear a 2nd and a 3rd buzz. The water should now be fully carbonated. All you need to do now is add a cap of flavoring and turn the bottle upside down very gently to mix it in. (Don't EVER try to find out what happens if you add the flavoring first and then carbonate it! Come over and look at my ceiling some time, and you'll realize that is not a good idea.)

In a nutshell, here are my overall thoughts on the Sodastream:

Things I like:
  • The regular flavors contain no high fructose corn syrup, and the diet flavors contain no aspartame.
  • I liked the taste of all the flavors that I tried. For whatever reason, my favorite was the Diet Pink Grapefruit.
  • It's very quick and easy to use. It is also much more convenient than purchasing store-bought drinks.
  • There is no trash to discard afterward.
Things I dislike:
  • Eventually the CO2 cartridge will run out, and I will need to exchange it for a full one. One cartridge will carbonate about 60 liters. To the best of my calculation that will be quite a bit cheaper than store bought soda, even when counting the cost of the flavoring. It's just harder for me to spend that much in one lump sum on soda that we don't drink all that often. For someone who drinks a whole lot of soda, I do think it would be worth it price-wise.
  • I'm a dishwasher kind of girl, and the bottles aren't dishwasher safe.

You can purchase Sodastream machines and accessories at their online store or use the store locator to find a Sodastream retailer in your area.

Disclosure: I was provided with a free Sodastream machine, carbonator, and flavorings for the purpose of this review. All opinions are 100% my own.

Hot! Soap.com Deal is Back! (Cheap Organic Products)

If you didn't get in on the hot Groupon deal the other day, it's back again! Choose Atlanta as the city.

Here are the details I posted the other day.

There's a Groupon deal for a $20 voucher to soap.com for $10. You'll find household products, health and beauty products, and more there, and your shipping will be free with the voucher purchase! Although many of you get these types of products free at CVS, etc., some of you don't have those stores, and this a great opportunity to get a steep discount.
Also, they sell natural and organic products which don't have great deals very often. For example, a 12 count box of Clif bars is on sale for $14.09. Here's a suggested scenario:

Purchase a $20 voucher for $10 at Groupon. Then purchase the following from soap.com:

Clif Kid Z Bar 6 pk ($4.39)
Clif Energy Bars 12 pk. ($14.09)
Ajax Lemon Dish Washing Liquid ($1.55)
Total : $20.03, plus your shipping is free with the voucher

You'll end up paying $10.03 for 18 Clif bars and dish soap! That's like paying $.56 per bar, and getting free dish soap besides!

Or, if you like the Clif Kid Z Bars well enough, here's another deal idea:

Buy 5 Clif Kid Z Bar 6 pk at $4.39 each = $21.95

You'll end up paying $11.95 for 30 bars, which comes out to $.40 per bar!

If you plan to purchase this Groupon, you'll need to hurry, since the deal ends soon!

Ingles Triple Coupon Deals

Ingles is having triple coupons through Saturday, 9/25. I waited to post about it until I had a chance to go and check out some prices and coupon matchups. Their registers automatically triple now, which made it a whole lot faster checking out. One thing I noticed is that they will triple up to the regular price of the item. For example, if an item is on sale for $1, but the regular price is $1.50, you will get $.50 overage. But if the regular price is $1.29, and you use a $.50 coupon, it will only triple up to $1.29. Keep in mind that you have to have a $10 order (pre-coupon) for every 3 coupons that you triple. Stock up on essentials like milk, meat, butter, eggs, etc. to help bring your total up.

Here's what I found:

Bisquick - $1.97
Use $.50 coupon from 8/8 General Mills insert
$.47

Newman's Own Pasta Sauce - $2
Use $.50 coupon from 8/15 Redplum
$.50

Skippy Peanut Butter Naturals - $2.18
Use $.50 printable coupon
$.68

Yakisoba noodles - $.75
Use $.50 coupon from 8/29 Smartsource
Free plus $.23 overage

Success Rice - $1.00
Use $.50 coupon from 6/27 Smartsource
Free plus $.28 overage

Mahatma Rice - $1.07
Use $.50 coupon from 8/29 Redplum
Free (No overage) There was a bigger bag that was less than $1.50. I was trying to get more overage by getting the smaller bag, but since there's no overage on regular prices, I should have just gotten the bigger bag for free.

Tetley Tea - $.99
Use $.50 printable coupon
Free plus $.51 overage

Rayovac Batteries - $1
Use $1 printable coupon

Betty Crocker pouch potatoes - $.98
Use $.40 coupon from 9/12 Smartsource
Free

Scotties Facial tissue - $1.00
Use $.50 printable coupon (Use code momgenerations)
Free plus $.33 overage

Atkins Nutrition bar - $1.48
Use $.50 printable coupon

Yoplait Whips Giveaway

This giveaway is now closed. The winner, chosen by random.org, is...

#19, Ruthill74

Check your email for further information.

We eat a lot of yogurt around here, mainly because it's easy to grab for a quick snack. I've purchased Yoplait Whips before, but we have never tried freezing them before. When I received a Yoplait Whips package from MyBlogSpark containing those adorable ice cream cone molds, I just had to try them out! I got some of the Strawberry Yoplait Whips at the store and froze it in the molds. It was absolutely delicious! I will definitely be purchasing Yoplait Whips in the future just for the purpose of freezing it. I was impressed with both the consistency and the taste of it. I can't wait to try the rest of the 9 flavors (
Chocolate Mousse, Chocolate Raspberry, Key Lime Pie, Lemon Burst, Orange Créme, Peaches ‘N Cream, Raspberry Mousse, Strawberry Mist, and Vanilla Créme).

Try it: Yoplait Whips are carried at most major grocery stores, and you can use this coupon for $.55 off any 2 cups.

Don’t forget to visit Yoplait on Facebook or Yoplait on Twitter to keep up with their latest products and offers.

Win it: One randomly selected winner will receive the prize pack pictured above
which includes
  • a VIP Coupon for a free sample of Yoplait Whips! yogurt
  • a canvas cooler bag
  • a set of four ice cream cone shaped popsicle molds

To enter: Just leave a comment below with your name and email address. That's it!

A winner will be selected by random.org on September 20, 2010.

Disclosure: MyBlogSpark and Yoplait provided me with a complimentary Yoplait Whips prize pack as well as information needed for this review. They will also be providing the prize pack for the giveaway winner.

Harris Teeter Super Doubles 9/15 - 9/21

Harris_Teeter_Super_Doubles
Harris Teeter will be having Super Double Coupons September 15 - 21. Coupons with a face value of up to $1.98 will be doubled, with a limit of 20 per household per day.

I have posted the match-ups in a Google Document which will allow you to sort the list according to your own preference - by price, insert date, or aisle of the store.

-The Master List is what will come up when you initially click on the link to the document. This is what you want to look at if you keep checking back to see if I've added anything new. Anything new that has been added to the list will be at the bottom of the Master List spreadsheet. ( I may or may not have time to add them to the other lists.)

-At the top of the spreadsheet you will see options to sort by price, by coupon source, or by aisle.

  • If you're the type that likes to shop according to what will be the cheapest, you'll want to sort by price. The list is sorted by the least expensive to the most expensive.

  • If you like to file your coupon inserts whole and only cut out the coupons when you need them, you'll want to sort by insert. The coupons are listed in order by insert date with printable coupons and other sources included as well.

  • If you want to print out a list for the store, you can sort by aisle to make your trip through the store go a little faster.

Click here to view the document.

I will be adding more deals as the week goes on, but please feel free to leave a comment if you find any deals not listed.
