My Extreme Couponing Trip Today (Plus a Couponing Tip)

I consider myself an extreme couponer, but not in the sense that I go into a store and get 30 bags of dog food for free, leaving none for the other shoppers (and I don't even have a dog!)

Nope, extreme couponing in my book means saving my family extreme amounts of money on products that we would normally use.

I just came home from my local Harris Teeter.  How much do you think I paid for this stuff?

1 box of Cheerios, 1 bag Kettle potato chips, 2 bags Bertolli Meal soups, 3 Ragu pasta sauce, 1 Breyers ice cream, 2 Suave Professionals hair stylers, 2 Wish Bone salad dressings, 1 Country Crock butter, and 4 Kraft shredded cheeses.


Just guess. 

If you guessed somewhere in the range of $3.00 you were right!  Not bad, especially when you consider that the price for just one bag of Bertolli soup was $8.19!

Here's my tip-of-the-day for racking up on the grocery savings.

Use free product coupons strategically.

If you're wondering where to even get free product coupons in the first place, be sure to follow my Facebook page.  Lots of companies on Facebook give away coupons for free products, and I always try to give a heads up.

Also, emailing companies is a GREAT way to get free product coupons.  If you like a certain company's products, just visit their website to find their email address and shoot them a line or two telling them you like their product and asking them if they have any coupons they could send you.  Be sure to include your mailing address.  You'll be surprised how many of them will send you coupons for free products, sometimes several of them!

So, when you get those wonderful coupons, don't do a happy dance and run out to the store to get your freebie.  Do a happy dance, and then put the coupons in a specific place where you won't forget about them.  Save them up for the next time your store has a promotion on that product.

For example, in the picture above, my store was giving an automatic $5 off when I bought $15 worth of specific products.  These promotions are almost always counted before you give your coupons.  I had several free coupons for some of the qualifying items, so I used the freebies to get my total as close to $15 as I could and then bought other items I wanted to finish it out.  So, if I had $10 worth of items I was already getting free with a coupon, I could throw in a $5 carton of ice cream to get up to $15.  $5 would come off from the promotion and $10 would come off from the free coupons, leaving me to pay $0.  Score!  I just got free ice cream and I didn't even have a coupon for it!  See how free coupons are great strategy pieces in the coupon game?

Like I said before though, make sure to put them in a specific place and check them once a month or so to make sure you don't have any that are expiring soon.  It would be a shame to let a coupon for a free product expire and not get to use it at all just because you were saving it for a better deal.

Here is an adorable idea for your kids to use for Valentine's Day that will hardly cost you a thing!

If you're looking to earn a little extra money online, you'll want to check out mysurvey.com.  While I haven't done surveys lately (due to spending more time working on this blog), I have done them in the past and had good experiences.  In about a year's time I earned right at $200 from mysurvey.com.  I know that's not much, but for a stay-at-home mom who'd like a little spending money that's not bad, especially considering  their surveys are generally very easy and short.

When you sign up for mysurvey.com, you can enter information for every member of your family, and they will send survey invitations to every member of your family, providing more opportunities to earn money.

You will be given a short screener survey to see if you qualify for a longer survey. If you do not qualify for the longer survey, you will still be awarded a little bit for your time to take the screener survey. If you do qualify to take the longer survey, you will be awarded more points depending on how long the survey is.

Rewards are given in the form of points, which can be redeemed for charitable donations, prizes, gift cards, or cash! I usually select the cash reward. It only takes 1000 points to earn $10, which really does not take long at all if you take every survey they send you.

Book Review: The Money Saving Mom's Budget (5 People win a Copy!)

Crystal Paine, of MoneySavingMom.com released her very first book a couple days ago entitled The Money Saving Mom's Budget.

This book is perfect for families or individuals looking for financial help.  The language in which it is written is so simple and down-to-earth that anyone can understand it.  It is written for real people like you and me.  If you're looking for some numerical mumbo jumbo that sounds all fancy-shmancy, don't read this book.  If you're looking for something simple, easy-to-understand, and practical,  read this book!

Unsuspecting readers may confused to find that the second chapter is all about reducing clutter from your life.  If you're wondering how in the world that has anything to do with your finances, you need to read this post over at Amy's Finer Things.  I could completely relate.  Are you starting to understand why this book is so practical and down-to-earth?  Crystal addresses the real issues that need to be addressed regarding our finances.  She starts down at the very foundation of the house before she tries to put the shingles on the roof.

Thanks to great training from both my parents and my husband's, we have never had much of a problem managing our finances or staying out of debt.  But, we can all learn something new, and I found quite a few great little nuggets in this book.  (You know, like how keeping clutter out of the house can help reduce expenses.)  There are tons of little tidbits thrown in there on just about everything you can imagine, from how to save money on eyeglasses to how to save money on your groceries without using coupons to how to make your own homemade cleaners.  Tons, really.  So many that you just need to read the book.

Whether you've already got a good handle on your family's budget or whether this is all new to you, there is enough practical wisdom packed in those 224 pages for every single person who reads this book to learn something new.

One thing in particular that has helped our family is going on a cash budget.  As I mentioned before, we were already doing pretty well managing our finances and we honestly did not think there was anything else we could cut out.  We don't have a landline; we drive a fully-payed-for used car; we do everything that frugal people are supposed to do.  Why in the world should we have switched to a cash budget?  Amazingly, our already crushed-to-the-tiniest-size-possible grocery budget dropped even lower when we switched to spending cash only.  Our savings has increased when we thought there was no more money to squeeze from anywhere.  Crystal explains all the whys and the hows of the cash budget in The Money Saving Mom's Budget, and I guarantee that you will be forever grateful to yourself if you read it and put her advice into practice.

Hopefully I've given you enough reason to grab this book (at the reduced price of only $8.40 right now).  But I'll mention one final thing.  I've been reading MoneySavingMom.com for around 4 years, and I have seen that the contents of this book stem from principles that are lived out in Crystal's life every single day.  She's sharing her own experiences so that others can avoid the hard road of debt or ill-managed finances.  All this is given not in a know-it-all fashion, but in genuine care and concern for others.
