eyeQ Phonics Review, Giveaway, and Discount Code

My little guy is a couple months shy of his 4th birthday, and he can already read!

The sentence he just finished in the picture above says "Pam has a hat and a bag."  That's not bad for a kid who's not even 4 years old!  Before you think I'm bragging on him, let me tell you that I'm actually bragging on the eyeQ Phonics program that we've been using. Just like anything else in life, it's not a magic potion.  But it is a great program that works wonderfully if you use it properly!

The eyeQ Phonics program is musically based, which is perfect for children.  The entire alphabet, along with the sound that each letter makes, is sung with the accompanying CD at the beginning of each lesson.  The tune is catchy (I often find myself singing it around the house!), which means that the student learns it easily and continues to have the sound of each letter reinforced to him over and over again.  Here's a quick clip of the song:

Each lesson consists of one letter and the sound that it makes.  There is a separate song for each letter.  The tunes for each letter song are also catchy so that the student can learn them in one lesson's time.  Along with the song, there is also a story to go along with the letter.  These stories contain the sound of the letter as often as possible throughout them.  The student is also provided with a workbook with an activity page for each letter.  He learns to write the letter he learned that day as well as color the pictures on the page that begin with that letter.  The teacher's manual contains additional ideas for supplementary activities to reinforce each letter even more.  Because there is so much emphasis put on the sound that each letter makes, my little guy has had no trouble remembering the correct sound when he sees a letter.

The letters are not presented in alphabetical order, but instead they are learned in an order that is most conducive to blending sounds and making words.  For example, some of the first letters learned are m, a, h,  p, s, t, and b, and d, allowing the reader to start off reading words like Sam, Pam, bat, hat, bad, etc.  After the first 8 letters, the student is able to start blending letters and reading his first books.

Here is my little guy doing some of his first reading:

In a nutshell, here are the features I most love about the eyeQ Phonics program:

  • Contains everything needed to get your youngster reading - CD, teacher's manual, student workbook, flashcards, and books
  • The musical emphasis really makes things "stick" and be easily remembered by the child
  • The teacher's manual contains complete instructions for each lesson.  There is no preparation required by the parent other than following the instructions.
  • The lessons are short and to the point, which is great for small children with short attention spans.  For children who want more, there are suggestions for additional activities to reinforce each letter.
  • The set contains a set of small flashcards that are to be used sort of like a prize when the child has finished a lesson.  (These are a big deal to my little guy!)
  • The student is able to start reading very quickly after starting the program.  This excites them and motivates them to want to learn even more letters!
  • The included readers are graduated in difficulty depending on how many letters the child has learned.  The first book only includes words with letters he has learned so far.  As he learns more letters, he can graduate to new books.
