Savings at Family Dollar

Last week I was out running some errands, and I had a few more gifts to pick up for our family's Christmas party, plus I had signed up to bring some small party favors to my sons homeschooler's Christmas party.  Thanks to Family Dollar and Mom Central, I had a $50 Family Dollar gift card to use, so I decided to pick up those items there.

I haven't shopped at Family Dollar in a long time, so I was also interested in browsing around just to get an idea of what kinds of products they have available as well as their prices.

The first thing I saw when I walked in the door was a big orange sign that said Buy Two Get One 50% off entire stock of toys.  I though that would be perfect since I needed exactly 3 more gifts for the babies in the family.  The only problem was that their stock of baby-appropriate toys was not very great.  This little truck was about the only thing I found, and I thought $5 was too high.  Taken out of the big box, it would have looked more like something that should be in the Dollar Store.  I moved on to a different area of the store.

I went down the baby aisle and found a couple good deals.  These Nuby cups were priced pretty low.  I also found some really cute outfits that seemed to be good quality.  I found some teething toys that were exactly like some we have at home.  The only difference is that ours were packaged in a name brand package and cost quite a bit more!

I remembered that I needed to get some crackers for the soup that was in the crockpot at home.  They had Family Dollar brand for $1.50.  Not bad!

Finally, I looked around to see if I could find some inexpensive party favors.  I found 10-packs of pencils for $1.  Perfect!
On my way up to the checkout, I noticed that they sell bread too.  $2.90 for one loaf of bread seemed much too high in my thinking.

I ended up only buying the 2 packs of pencils and a box of crackers, so my total only came to $3.74.  I'm planning on checking out their after-Christmas sales to use up the rest of my gift card!

My final conclusion is that Family Dollar has some really good prices on some items, but you must shop with discretion.  For the items that are good prices, they are very good prices.  Just be sure you are aware of prices at other stores and make sure that the item you are buying is priced lower than at other stores.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Family Dollar and received a gift card to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.
