Harris Teeter Triples Results

Just thought I'd mention how my trip to Harris Teeter went. I'm hoping to get over there again before the end of the week, but even if I don't I'm pretty happy with all that I got.

My total for all of this was $45.45 before coupons, and $4.86 after coupons. That's a savings of almost 90 percent!

If you haven't yet seen them, make sure you take a look at the coupon matchups I have posted for the triples deals this week. Everything I got should be on that list.

The only other things I think I should mention are the Glass Plus, which had $.50 peelies on every single bottle, making it free. I figured if you didn't have coupons for it, you could at least check for peelies. The Nature's Pride bread also had a peelie on it for $.55, making it around $.50 after coupon. The Grande Tortilla chips had peelies on them for $2 off beef when you buy 2 bags of chips.

Kid's Gift Idea from Amazon.com

This is so exciting! I have been telling my husband that I wanted to get my son a rocking horse for his birthday. I've been watching the sales for them, but haven't come across one to fit my budget yet. Today I saw that Amazon.com has this Radio Flyer Classic Wood Rocking Horse for $29.99, originally $129.99! Plus, I'll be buying it with Amazon giftcards that I got from Swagbucks, so I'll be able to get it for free!

PR Welcome

If you are a PR Rep or Company Owner wishing to have your product reviewed, please contact me at maryellen (at) thedealscoop (dot) com or use the contact form.

I will happily consider any products that are family-friendly and that I feel would be a good fit for myself and my readers.

Product Review Policies:

I do not charge for product reviews; I simply ask that you send a non-returnable product for me to review.

Although it is not a requirement, I strongly suggest that you provide an additional product that I can use a giveaway for my readers. Giveaways generate a much larger amount of buzz about your product. I promote my giveaways heavily on Facebook and Twitter as well as several other giveaway linking sites, which drives a large amount of traffic directly to the review & giveaway.

Giveaway Policies:

Giveaways should be shipped directly from your company to the giveaway winner, unless the product is small enough to be shipped in a business-sized envelope.

Giveaways typically run between 7 - 14 days depending on the value of the product.  Please let me know if you would like to have any particular pages promoted (Facebook, Twitter, etc.).  I am happy to include following those as entries in the giveaway.

At the end of the contest period, the winner will be selected via Random.org's random integer generator. The winner is announced on a blog post and contacted via email. The winner will then respond with their shipping information which will be forwarded to you.

When submitting a product for a giveaway, please provide the following information:

-The exact items that are to be given away.
-What locations the giveaway is open to (US, Canada, etc.)
-Any discount codes you wish to offer my readers to order your products (optional)

Earn Money Online: Swagbucks

One of the very easiest and most productive ways to earn money online is by doing all your web searches through Swagbucks.

Search & Win

As you search the web, you can randomly win Swagbucks. I usually win at least one Swagbuck every single time I do a search.

Swagbucks can be redeemed for prizes or gift cards. I love the fact that you can redeem Swagbucks for Amazon gift cards. It only takes 450 Swagbucks to redeem for a $5 Amazon gift card. I can easily get up to 450 Swagbucks in about a month just by regular searching. If you refer others to Swagbucks, though, you win a Swagbuck every single time your referrals win one (up to 1000 Swagbucks)!

I love using Swagbucks to get Amazon gift cards that I can then use to buy Christmas gifts or just things that I need.

Walgreens for Beginners

Just like the great deals that can be gotten at CVS (check out my CVS tutorial), there is also great potential to get free and very inexpensive at Walgreens too. Their system is quite different than the system at CVS, though, so I think I should explain how it all works.

REGISTER REWARDS

The main way to get great deals at Walgreens is through their Register Rewards.

Register Rewards are coupons worth a certain dollar amount that you can use to help pay for another purchase. They print at the register when you buy certain items.

Every week the ad will feature the items that produce Register Rewards. Many times these items are a good deal in and of themselves, but if you have coupons for the items, you can often get products for free or even make money! For instance, sometimes items are advertised as "Free after Register Rewards". If the item costs $2.99, and you use a $1 coupon, you will pay $1.99, but a Register Reward for $2.99 will print, meaning you will leave the store with more than money than you paid!

IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT REGISTER REWARDS

  • You can use Register Rewards to pay for any of your purchases. However, Register Rewards can not always be "rolled" (using Register Rewards to pay for something else that gives back Register Rewards.) You cannot use a Register Reward from one product to pay for another of the same product. The new Register Rewards will not print. Also, you generally cannot roll Register Rewards between two products that are the same brand. For example, if you had Register Rewards that printed from buying Pampers, you could not use them to buy Crest toothpaste and have new Register Rewards print (these are both Proctor & Gamble products.)

  • Remember that only one Register Reward will print per offer per transaction. If you buy 2 different advertised deals, both Register Rewards will print, but you cannot purchase 2 of the same deal in one transaction. For example, if Crest toothpaste is advertised as giving back $2 in Register Rewards, and Huggies diapers are advertised as giving back $3 in Register Rewards, you can buy both products and get back a $2 and a $3 Register Reward. But you cannot buy 2 Crest toothpastes and get back 2 $2 Register Rewards. If you wanted to buy another toothpaste and get back more Register Rewards, you would need to buy it on a separate transaction.

  • Register Rewards are treated by the cash registers just like any other manufacturer coupon. Since you can only use one manufacturer coupon per item purchased, you need to make sure that the number of items you are purchasing is equal to or greater than the number of coupons you have, including any Register Rewards you may have. If you are planning on using a coupon on everything you are buying, you need to add a small filler to your transaction in order to be able to use a Register Reward. (Note: Walgreens Store Coupons and 7-day coupons, which I will discuss a little later, are not considered manufacturer coupons, so you do not need to have extra items for those.)

  • If a deal is advertised as something like "Buy $25 worth of select products, get $10 Register Rewards", the value of what you are buying is computed before coupons. An example of this type of deal would be this: "Buy $20 of Huggies products, get $5 Register Rewards." If the diapers are $10 a pack, you could buy 2 packs for $20, use 2 $1 coupons, and pay a total of $18. You would still get the $5 Register Rewards.

MAKING SURE YOUR REGISTER REWARDS PRINT

There are a couple possible reasons why Register Rewards do not print.
1. You didn't buy the correct items. Double check the ad and make sure that you bought the right item including the correct size, variety, etc. If you had to buy a certain dollar amount of something, make sure the items rang up correctly. Sometimes things ring up cheaper than you expected them to, making the total value lower than necessary to get the Register Rewards.
2. The macine is not working or is not on. I have learned to look at the machine before I check out. If there is a green light, my Register Rewards generally print without a problem. If there is a red light or no light at all, I go to a different register because the machine is most likely not working.

COUPONS

There are 3 types of coupons that can be used at Walgreens:

1. Manufacturer's coupons - These are regular coupons like you would get out of the Sunday paper.

2. Walgreens store coupons - These are coupons that can only be used at Walgreens. They can sometimes be found in pamphlets or other places throughout the store.

3. 7 day coupons (in-ad coupons) - these are coupons that are found in the weekly ad. They are basically sale prices, but you must have the cashier scan the coupon, or the product will not ring up for the sale price.

You may use 1 store coupon and one manufacturer's coupon per item. The best order to give coupons is this: give the manufacturer's coupon first, then the store coupon. The reason for that order is that if the two coupons combined are worth more than the cost of the item, a manufacturer's coupon will beep if given last. Store coupons will go through just fine if given last, giving you overage toward the rest of your purchase.

If I haven't answered all your questions, feel free to email me or leave a comment, and I'll do my best to give you an answer!

Please Excuse the Mess!

There are still plenty of things I'm working on here at the Deal Scoop. Some things are not quite set up completely, but I wanted to go ahead and start posting since we have triple coupons coming at Harris Teeter this week! If you see something that's not quite right, please just ignore it and enjoy the deals! I'm hoping to get things finished up around here very shortly!

CVS for Beginners

Have you ever wondered how people get all kinds of things for FREE at CVS? Have you wanted to get in on the deals, but just aren't sure how to do it? Here I'll explain how you too can walk out the door of CVS paying just pennies for bags full of goodies!

How the system works:

Every week CVS puts out a circular which lists the sale items. Many of those items, however, are not only on sale, but they also produce what are called Extra Care Bucks (ECB's). When you buy that particular item, a coupon will print at the bottom of your receipt that can be used toward your next purchase.

Keep in mind, though, that you cannot split up ECB's. For instance, if you have an ECB worth $3.00 and your total is only $2.00, your ECB will pay the $2.00, but you will not get the other $1.00 back. Instead, you want to make sure your total would be at least $3.00 so that you don't waste any of your ECB's.

Another thing to keep in mind is that ECB's will not pay for sales tax. If your total is $3.00 and you want to pay with $3.00 in ECB's, your subtotal might only be $2.49. Therefore, you would waste $.51 worth of ECB's. I always ask what the subtotal is to make sure I am not giving them more ECB's than I need to.

How to get actually get free stuff:

Many times it is as simple as CVS giving stuff away. If you look in the circular you might find something like X brand deodorant: buy it for $3.99, get back $3.99 ECB's. "Well, that's not free", you say, "I still have to pay $3.99 in cash." Yes you do, but you'll only have to do that on your first trip. Once you get that $3.99 worth of ECBs, you can those from now on. The trick is to do what is called "rolling" your ECB's. Instead of buying anything you want for $3.99, you need to buy something else that gives back ECB's.

Sometimes, things are not necessarily free after ECB's, but if you add a coupon to the mix, then they will be. For example, you might find in the circular X brand shampoo: buy it for $4.99, get back $4.00 ECB's. If you have a coupon for $1.00 off, though, you would buy the shampoo for $4.99, use your coupon to make it $3.99, and get back $4.00 in ECB's. If you used your $3.99 ECB's from the deodorant you bought, then you didn't have to pay anything for your shampoo, and you still have $4.00 in ECB's for next time. And you actually gained a penny's worth of ECB's!

How to get started:

1. If you do not already have a CVS Extracare card, sign up in the store to get one.

2. You need to either subscribe to the Sunday paper or buy a Sunday paper every week. You will need all the coupons you can get!

3. Save every coupon whether it is for something you would normally buy or not. There will be times when it will be advantageous to buy something just because you can actually make money buying it.

4. Read this blog regularly to stay updated on each week's deals.

5. After you get your CVS card, go to the CVS website and register your card with them. They will email CVS store coupons occasionally.

Useful Tips:

1. Remember that there are limits on all the ECB items. The ad as well as the sale tag on the shelf will clearly state what the limit is. This is usually pretty self-explanatory. But if, for instance, the ad states "buy 2 of x product, get $5 ECB's", and the limit is 2 per household, then that means that you can get the ECB's 2 times; it does not mean you can only buy 2 products. You could buy 4 products and get the $5 ECB's twice.

2. You do not have to do a buy $$, get $ deal all in one transaction. For example, if the ad states "Buy $15 of x product, get $5 ECB's", you do not have to buy all $15 worth in one transaction. If you only buy part of it the first time, your receipt will tell you how much you have toward that deal and how much you still need to spend to get the ECB's.

3. Your receipt will also tell you when you have reached your limit on an item. Or if you haven't reached your limit yet, it will tell you how many more you can get before you do reach your limit. I think this feature actually comes in very handy because I don't always buy my limit of an item all at once, but sometimes I can't remember how many I have bought. I'd hate to buy my sixth item when the limit was 5 and not get any ECB's back.

4. Use $/$$ coupons strategically. Occasionally CVS customers receive coupons for $4 off $20, $5 off $25, etc. The $20 or $25 is based on pre-coupon prices. These coupons are great when there are a lot of "free after ECB" items or "free after coupon" items. Let's say for instance that you have a $4 0ff $20 coupon, and there are $10 worth of "free after ECB" items that week. Let's also say that there is something you really want that costs $10, and gives $5 ECBs back. And let's also say that you have coupons for some of those items that amount to $2. Here's an example of how you could still get what you want for free:

$10 - "free after ECB" items
$10 - regular price of the item you really want
___
$20 - Total pre-coupon price
-$4 - $4/$20 coupon
-$2 Manufacturer's coupons
___
$14 - (paid with previously earned ECB's, ideally)
Receive back $10 for the "free after ECB" items, and $5 for the other item. So you would pay $14, and get back $15.

(Make sure to hand the $4/$20 coupon to the cashier first. Otherwise your total will no longer be $20 after the other coupons are scanned.)

5. Ask for rainchecks. Don't worry if something is out of stock. Ask for a raincheck, and the next time you shop, you can purchase the item, and the cashier will manually print you the ECBs for the item.

6. Stack store coupons with manufacturer's coupons. CVS has store coupons that can be found in various magazines, in-store, and most commonly at the bottom of your receipts. You may use one store coupon and one manufacturer's coupon per item. If you have a store coupon for $1.00 off and a manufacturer's coupon for $1.00 off the same item, you can use them both to get $2.00 off.

7. Remember that ECBs for the same item will print in one lump sum. For instance, if Right Guard deodarant is giving back $2 ECBs, and you purchase 3 at one time, you will get one $6 ECB, rather than three $2 ECBs. If you want your ECB's to be in smaller increments, then you should buy each deodorant in a separate transaction.

New Blog, New Focus

Many of you already know me since I used to blog over at Centsible Savings. When my husband and I found out that we are expecting our second baby, I felt it necessary to discontinue blogging and make sure I had all my priorities in order. I want to make sure I am as dedicated to being a wife and mother as I possibly can, and to make sure my values are focused on eternity rather than the present.

However, even though I stopped blogging, many people still looked to me as their information source to help them navigate through the grocery and drug store deals. Without a blog, I was writing lists, emailing people, calling them, etc., when they asked about the deals. This was taking up even more of my time than I had been spending before.

My husband agreed that the best course of action would be to go ahead and start another blog with a focus primarily on helping friends and family stay updated with our local deals. This will all be with the understanding that my responsibilities as a wife and mother will always come first. If there are days that I cannot get the deals up without skewing my priorities, then the deals will have to wait. I do want to be a help to others, but even more than that I want to be the best wife and mommy that I can!
